My Story: Inspiration

For our Senior Project, we were given the freedom to choose what we wanted to do. Ideas varied from creating video games to painting murals around the city. At first I was stuck. I did not know what to do. When I went to my advisory and told him that I had no idea as to what my Senor project would be he simply told me,

"Do it on something you are passionate about."

I knew that I loved math and I knew that I wanted to pruse an Education degree, but what could I possibly do that invovlved the two? A light bulb went off in the top of my head.

Because it was my senior year, I knew that I could not take on the pressure of teaching a whole math class. I had to simplfy. That is when my mother bought the idea to me that I could be a math tutor.

Brilliant, I always called my mother.  Every wednesday after school, I would go to my middle school, and with a selected group of people I would tutor them.

Since I could remeber, I have always wanted to be a teacher. I would study the way my teachers moved, the way the deciplined, and most importantly the way they thought. Something about giving back to my community has always been something I had a passion to do and what better way could this be done then teaching.

Throughout middle school I attend KIPP Philadlepihia Charter School were they had a different way of teaching kids. While majority of the things we did as far as reading books, and doing math problems were similar to other schools, there was an additional thing done that made the students want to do there best. Our Teachers would have us memorize chants, play games, and do many more activties that pertainted to what we were learning. Becuase of these stretiges, KIPP's PSSA scores were off the roof. This result could not help me stop and wonder "Is This the best way to teach?". My question wolud not be answered until I got to Science Leadership Academy my 12th grade year.

My 7th grade spanish class during a chant battle.

We went of concepts like simple algebra, permutations and combinations, adding and subtracting. However, there came a time in some sessions where I could not help the students. It was not because I didn't know what was uneducated, but becuase I needed some refreshments. When I struggled with helping the students, the thought of "How could this have been better"  ran through my mind.  Not only was knowing the material a problem, there were little things in between as well that if I knew how to handle proir to the sessions, the children would have learned so much more.

And this is why I decieded to create this website. To help future tutors or maybe even teachers avoid being an unsuccesful througout this website, you will find different tools that will help you help your students. This website gives the in and outs on how to be the best tutor you can possibly be.
